The delicate art involves making pictures and geometric designs with thin slices of coloured wood, shell and other precious materials. It is a popular technique for decorating the smooth surfaces of pieces of furniture, as well as a versatile means of creative expression. Marquetry dates back to around 350 B.C.

Josef Crean

A violinist and a musician, Josef's fascination with marquetry sparked, 15 years ago, when he came across a violin, which had the streets of Vienna veneered in the back.

Ever since then, Josef worked hard to skill himself in marquety and now produces quality work. He is an accomplished marquetarian.

According to Josef: "Marquetry is a demanding art, from the first stroke of a pencil to the end product."

Josef's creative works of art include pieces from a range of cultures. He believes in the richness of diversity in life.

He uses his skill to create products, which celebrate and foster diversity and links between cultures.

Josef's fame has so far has been spread by word of mouth, from those who know his work. He is now on the look out for special commissions.

He is specially interested in working for companies, who want their logos done in marquetry.

Josef received a scholarship from the New Entrepreneur Scholarship Programme, which provides a comprehensive package of support, mentoring and funding to encourage and support the start-up and growth of new businesses.
