Promoting enterprise among disadvantaged communities on the internet is at the heart of Changeways International's activities. The Brent Council's Harlesden and Stonebridge Renewal Team, organized a Barberfest to promote the trade among the local the local community.

The event highlighted the economic and employment opportunities that are available in the barbering and men’s grooming sectors. It also heped to recognize the important role played by the barbers and the men's grooming sector in the community.

Over 90 local residents were given free hair cuts.Seven local barbers representing salons from Philly and Son, The Barber Shop, Actife, Ike Barbers and Faisal Barbers of London provided the community service and groomed over 90 residents.

The outdoor event was compeered by local performing artiste ‘Jules’ Payne. Then barbers competed fiercely in the first ever Harlesden Barber of the Year.

Over 200 residents attended the event. Many more listened to the live feed to the local radio stations.

A panel of judges, representing the College of North West London, Styles International, a local women’s salon, Stonebridge Housing Action Trust and Five, barber to the stars, presided over the tightly contested competition.

Martin Francis, 24 from Actife Barbers in Craven Park, who produced a classic cut with a contemporary look, was unanimously judged the winner.

Martin said: “The competition was very close but I am pleased to hold the first ever Harlesden Barber of the Year trophy.”

Patrick Lewis, Head of the Brent Council's Neighbourhood Renewal Team for Harlesden and Stonebridge said: “The event is about addressing some of the negativity that is portrayed about Harlesden and embracing its business success, through the barbers who are our unsung heroes in our community.”
